Scottish Teams in Europe

The season really gets underway tomorrow, guess what 3 of our 4 teams are out, only Celtic remain, lets all hope they qualify for the Champion League so some dignity can return to our game, Are we really that bad, the answer seems to be yes, no much wonder Uefa, are considering changes and getting rid of us. Gone are the days when we could give a good account of ourselves, how low are we really going to go, the answer not to far, we are at the bottom and i can't really see us rising in the forceable future...

Cup game on Tuesday night at Ibrox, these games are coming thick and fast.
I already feel a little sorry for Phead as they will really be up against it tomorrow night and i cant see how they are going to get something from the game.

To hurt us on the break they will need a quick forward player as our defence struggle to deal with pace.
Can see a few goals flying in.

First leg is at home for Celtic and a victory by at least 2 goals should all but see them through to the CL proper.

I dont know anything about this team and that could proove to be their big danger, people under estimating them. Rodgers has already come out and said the first and second qualifiers are usually harder than the third......is their a danger he may under estimate them ?

I dont think he will be that negligent but i find it difficult to predict a scoreline as i dont know the other team but looking at Celtics games so far i think they will find it hard going but home advantage should see them record a victory.

2-0 Celtic.

Under 20 teams in Irn Bru Cup?

$

I think it has been as success. The under 20 players will have got vital experience from playing senior sides and will develop from this cup.

The fact only 1 of the twelve under 20 teams has made the third round is great because it will show the young under 20 players what they have to do to reach senior levels.

I would support Celtic and Rangers having under 20 teams in the league system as long as they do not have to play too many games. It would be a real way of evaluating how good the young players are.

My teams Aberdeen and Inverness will have got a real education from being knocked out by senior sides. While hopefully Celtic under 20 can learn a lot from this trophy.

Celtic League Cup Idea

$

0
How about a Celtic League Cup played between all the top division clubs sides of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Wales, plus representative sides from Cornwall and the Isle of Man?
This would allow Scottish teams the chance to help the smaller Celtic nations to develop their football leagues and allow Scottish football to grow.

Structure of trophy:
Organisation of trophy.
I would have preliminary rounds, group stages then the knockout stages, leading to a final. This is how I would organise it.
The trophy would consist of 16 Scottish sides, 12 Welsh Premier sides, 1 side from Cornwall, 1 side from the Isle of Man, 12 Northern Ireland top division sides, 12 League of Ireland sides. Plus two teams invited in from England or the lower divisions of the Celtic Leagues. Creating a 56 team trophy.

Group Stages
There would be 8 groups of 4 in the group stages, for 32 teams, consisting of all 16 Scottish Premier sides, plus the top 2 sides each from Wales, Northern Ireland and the top 4 from the Republic of Ireland, qualify automatically for the group stages. Equalling 24 teams automatically in the group stages.
This leaves 8 places left to qualify for group stages from the other 32 Cornish, Isle of Man, Welsh, Ulster and Irish league sides left in the trophy. For mathematical reasons 2 teams would be invited from the lower divisions of the Celtic Leagues or England to take up the preliminary round numbers to 32. Meaning a 56 team trophy.
The object of the preliminary round is to get from 32 teams not in the group stages down to 8 teams, who qualify for the group stages.
Preliminary rounds.
There would be two preliminary rounds, where the winning 8 teams qualify for the group stages.
Group stage 8 groups of 4. 32 teams.

Knockout Stages.
Top two teams from each group qualify for the final 16 knockout stages.
The next f rounds lead to the final, each tie is one leg with the first team drawn out of the hat given home advantage.
32 teams
no amount of internal reorganisation will alter that.
A group stage trophy of 16 Scottish sides, 12 Welsh Premier sides, 1 side from Cornwall, 1 side from the Isle of Man, 12 Northern Ireland top division sides, 12 League of Ireland sides. Creating a 54 team group stage trophy.

Domestic TV rights are negotiated by the leagues of each nation with national rights shared between the four domestic teams. International rights are shared equally among the 16 clubs.

Reform of domestic leagues:
Scottish
League
Scottish clubs need to look outward to play teams from other countries.
In Scotland, I would like a 16 team domestic league simply to free up weeks in the calendar to have a cross border tournament. All this talk of 16, team, 12 team, 10 team leagues is meaningless, if we just play inward looking games, of reorganising the same teams. We are limited to two massive clubs in Scotland, and no amount of internal reorganisation will alter that.

Populations
4.7 million Republic of Ireland
1.8 million Northern Ireland
3 million Wales
5 million Scotland
84,000 Isle of Man
540,000 Cornwall
Over 13 million total population of participating nations.

Criticisms of Idea
Travel is tough.
I disagree, look at the trips taken up by teams in Australia, Russia, and China. A trip to a Western European nation is relatively easy.

Would UEFA Allow it?
UEFA have allowed other countries to have cross border cups such as the Royal League, and the cup played by teams from the League of Ireland and the Irish League. There is a club from Liechtenstein in the Swiss League. There are clubs from Wakes in the English league and a club from England in the Scottish League.
UEFA refused permission for a North Atlantic League but they did not refuse permission for North Atlantic League Cup.
UEFA do not want to destroy the national league system. But this idea works in tandem with the national league.
UEFA have allowed Welsh and Ulster sides to play in the Scottish Irn Bru Cup.

Loss of two Old Firm Games
What I would say is that the Old Firm games would be replaced by playing teams from other countries, and helping other countries leagues grow, with a chance for the Old Firm to market themselves to other nations and to win cross border trophies.

Scheduling of tournament.
I have been told by a very good journalist in Scottish football, that to plan such a trophy, and change to Scottish football. I need to add my plan for the dates of the trophy. I will do so using the calendar of Glasgow Celtic as an example. Remember I would play the Celtic League Cup group stages on the same day as the domestic Scottish League Cup group stages in the place where 6 league games of the league season were previously played. As the Scottish League will have been reduced to 30 games a season in 16 team divisions, it is possible to replace what would be league games in the present system with games in group stages of the Celtic League Cup, and Domestic League Cups.
Here is the Glasgow Celtic example.

So the Celtic League Cup groups stages, and Domestic League Cup group stages would have taken place between the 6th of August, and the 1st of October, this season, as an example.
I realise some of the games would not be glamorous but it would be about developing a trophy that could grow. This would give fans new clubs to see and could awaken the sleeping giant of Ireland in football. Perhaps clubs like Wrexham, Colwyn Bay and Newport might join the Welsh League. Imagine games like Aberdeen playing in the Aviva stadium in front of 30,000 fans, or Glasgow Celtic playing Bohemians in front of 30,000 fans in Dublin. It would increase the TV market for Scottish teams, and help the other Celtic nations.
Also how about a Welsh Gold Cup containing all Welsh Premier first teams, and every under 20 team of every Scottish Premier, and English Premier side? To give young players competitive games and to give Welsh clubs games against big club sides every season.

No Celtic poster wanting to start this topic? 😄

Really looking forward to De Bruyne , Silva , Augero and the inform Sterling going up against this Celtic defence 😄

City have looked unstoppable under Pep and the only hope for Celtic is if City choose to rest a few players and take it easy.

Nice to see Kolarov getting a decent run in the team. Most underrated player at City along with Fernandinho.

Not going to go over the top with a prediction as surely Rodgers won't let what happened in Barcelona happen again. They surely learned a lesson that night.

Scottish - Cross Border? Cup

$

How about a cup played between the top four clubs sides of Scotland, and the top four of one other country in a group stage trophy?
At the end of each season the top four placed teams in the two respective leagues qualify for the cup.
The idea is to choose another small or medium sized European football power for a cross border cup, such as a Scottish - Dutch Cup, Scottish - Belgian Cup, Scottish - Portugal Cup, Scottish - Swiss Cup, Scottish - Denmark, for example or Norway, Poland, France, Greece, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria, a region of England, USA, Russia, Romania.
My previous idea was a North Atlantic League Cup with group stages and 1 Scottish team in each of the 4 groups, but some have said the problem with my idea is removing Scottish Old Firm derby games. This idea would ensure two old firm derby games in the Cross Border Cup.

Structure of trophy:
The Cup will be a group stage trophy with two groups of four. Two Scottish teams in each group and 2 teams from the other country in each group. The top 2 teams of each group qualify for the single leg semi final. There is then a one leg final.
The top teams in the group stage have home advantage in the single leg semi final.
In the group stages, teams will keep 100% of home gate receipts. In the knockout stages teams will share gate receipts 50 / 50.
The home group stage games will be sold as part of the season ticket. The games will be played at the weekend. Plus to ensure the integrity of the trophy, any team who field a second team in the Cup, will have 3 points deducted in their national league. On the days the cross border Cup is taking place, the domestic teams who did not qualify for the Cup would play in the group stages of a domestic cup competition, such as the League Cup.
By cutting the domestic league to 30 games a season with 16 team divisions, 8 league games would be removed the calendar, freeing up weeks to play the cross border Cup.
I would play the North Atlantic League Cup trophy at the start of the season in 6 weekends that would have had league games in the present system. On the same day the domestic League Cup group stages would take place, with teams who had not qualified for the Cross Border Cup.

Domestic TV rights are negotiated by the leagues of each nation with national rights shared between the four domestic teams. International rights are shared equally among the 8 clubs.

Reform of domestic leagues:
Each of the nations top divisions will be changed to a 16 team, 30 games a season, league. Freeing up weeks in the season for these extra games for this new trophy.
Teams who did not qualify for the Cross Border Cup, but are in the top division of their national league will be given a place in the group stage of a domestic national league cup to play extra games. For instance the Scottish League could be 3 divisions of 16, with non league teams and under 20 sides of Celtic, Aberdeen, and Rangers added to the third division.

Justification for the trophy:.
The current European trophies are good, but do not guarantee games against big Western European nation sides. This would ensure cross border games.

Scottish clubs need to look outward to play teams from other countries.
I would like a 16 team domestic league simply to free up weeks in the calendar to have a cross border tournament. All this talk of 16, team, 12 team, 10 team leagues is meaningless, if we just play inward looking games, of reorganising the same teams. We are limited to two massive clubs in Scotland, and no amount of internal reorganisation will alter that that.

Criticisms of trophy.
Fake trophy complaint
Some would say this a fake trophy. But that is a poor reason to complain about the trophy. Anything can be seen as a fake trophy if you want to get all existential about it. Look at the American sport leagues where there is no relegation, franchises, league names that do not conflate to the region of America they are from. Teams moving thousands of miles away. World leagues that only contain the USA and Canada.

Travel is tough.
I disagree, look at the trips taken up by teams in Australia, Russia, and China. A trip to a Western European nation is relatively easy.

UEFA would not allow it.
UEFA have allowed other countries to have cross border cups such as the Royal League, and the cup played by teams from the League of Ireland and the Irish League. There is a club from Liechtenstein in the Swiss League. There are clubs from Wales in the English league and a club from England in the Scottish League.
UEFA refused permission for a North Atlantic League but they did not refuse permission for Cross Border Cup.
UEFA do not want to destroy the national league system. But this idea works in tandem with the national league.
UEFA have allowed Welsh and Ulster sides to play in the Scottish Irn Bru Cup.

Loss of two Old Firm Games
My idea would be two teams from Scotland in each group. So the deal could be that Celtic and Rangers are fixed to play each other in the group stages, so ensuring that the domestic Scottish league and cross border cup add up to 4 guaranteed Old Firm games.

Scheduling of tournament.
